Steps to open a business in Spain
These are the steps to open a business in Spain
- First, you need to obtain a personal NIE number (Número de Identificación de extranjero)
- Then propose and validate at least 3 possible names of the company.
- Define the purpose of the company following the CNAE (National classification of the economic activities).
- You will then obtain a so called “certificate of uniqueness“
- Obtain a company’s Tax ID number (the CIF, Código de Identificación Fiscal). You may later ask for a European VAT number
- Open a bank account at the name of the company
- Define the shareholders and the shareholders agreement
- Sign the public deed of incorporation at the notary
- Then register it at the national and local tax authorities

How long does it take to open a business in Spain
The first step is the time required to evaluate the different company structure forms, depending on the headquarter’s objectives.
The second step is the time needed to create and validate all the paperwork and documentation: translations, official stamps, etc.
To become shareholder of the newly created company, every partner need to obtain a Foreigner Identification Number (NIE), a process that may take around a couple of weeks.
Finally, when all previous steps are fulfilled, the whole company creation process takes between 4 to 6 weeks.
